Actor George Clooney contracted malaria again

George Clooney

The MSNBC reported on 20 January that Hollywood actor and philanthropist GeorgeGeorge Clooney contracted malaria--a disease brought about by bites of infected mosquitoes--during his recent trip to war-torn Sudan, confirmed by his representative to E! News.

The news came from a tweet message by Piers Morgan, "George Clooney has contracted malaria following recent trip to Sudan."

This bout of malaria is actually the second time Clooney had the disease.

"More Clooney--it's his 2nd bout of malaria. Taking medication but feeling rough," in another tweet.

The news said that the actor is doing fine, he just have to take the necessary medications.

The actor said, "This illustrates how with proper medication, the most lethal condition in Africa can be reduced to a bad ten days instead of a death."

Clooney went to Sudan as part of the UN mission to prevent violence in the country.

After the 9 January referendum, the South voted to separate from the rest of the nation.

Malaria is characterized by fever, headache, and vomiting 10 to 15 days after mosquito bite. Left untreated, it can be very fatal. Prevention include use of mosquito nets and spraying insecticides to control the vectors. Treatment includes immediate artemisinin-based therapies.

Pesticides malign for pregnant women

Big Pregnant Women

Pesticides malign for pregnant women

Many doctors advise pregnant women not to use pesticides or to be exposed to them, as many studies had proven the use of pesticides or being exposed to them could make the babies of pregnant women born in these noxious circumstances less intelligent than babies born in normal circumstances.

This fact could lead to complete interdiction of pesticides worldwide, as pesticides had many side effects on human health but also on environment.

Life Extension: Heat stroke

heat stroke

Heat stroke is the most severe form of heat illness and is a life-threatening emergency. It is the result of long, extreme exposure to the sun, in which a person does not sweat enough to lower body temperature. The elderly, infants, persons who work outdoors, and those on certain types of medication are most susceptible to heat stroke. It is a condition that develops rapidly and requires immediate medical treatment.

Causes of heat stroke

Our bodies produce a tremendous amount of internal heat and we normally cool ourselves by sweating and radiating heat through the skin. However, in certain circumstances, such as extreme heat, high humidity, or vigorous activity in the hot sun, this cooling system may begin to fail, allowing heat to build up to dangerous levels.

If a person becomes dehydrated and can not sweat enough to cool the body, the internal temperature may rise to dangerously high levels, causing heat stroke.

What are the symptoms of heat stroke?

The following are the most common symptoms of heat stroke, although each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:

Headache.

Dizziness.

Disorientation, agitation, or confusion.

Sluggishness or fatigue.

Seizure.

Hot, dry skin that is flushed but not sweaty.

A high body temperature.

Loss of consciousness.

Rapid heart beat.

Hallucinations.

How is heat stroke treated?

It is important for the person to be treated immediately as heat stroke can cause permanent damage or death. There are some immediate first-aid measures you can take while waiting for help to arrive:

Get the person indoors.

Remove clothing and gently apply cool water to the skin followed by fanning to stimulate sweating.

Apply ice packs to the groin and armpits.

Have the person lie down in a cool area with their feet slightly elevated.

Intravenous fluids are often necessary to compensate for fluid or electrolyte loss. Bed rest is generally advised and body temperature may fluctuate abnormally for weeks after heat stroke.

How can heat stroke be prevented?

There are precautions that can help protect you against the adverse effects of heat stroke. These include:

Drink plenty of fluids during outdoor activities, especially on hot days. Water and sports drinks are the drinks of choice; avoid tea, coffee, soda, and alcohol as these can lead to dehydration.

Wear lightweight, tightly woven, loose-fitting clothing in light colors.

Schedule vigorous activity and sports for cooler times of the day.

Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat, sunglasses, and using an umbrella.

Increase time spent outdoors gradually to get your body used to the heat.

During outdoor activities, take frequent drink breaks and mist yourself with a spray bottle to avoid becoming overheated.

Try to spend as much time indoors as possible on very hot and humid days.

If you live in a hot climate and have a chronic condition, talk to your physician about extra precautions you can take to protect yourself against heat stroke.

Car contains nine times more bacteria than toilet seats

The toilet seat has herpes

The average car interior contains about 700 bacteria, swarming on a toilet seat only 80 per 2.5 square centimeters. Researchers discovered in London.

42% of drivers regularly eat behind the wheel, thus they run subconsciously a lot of risks of getting health problems. One third of the directors, the inside of his car once a year clean, 10% never do this.

According to scientists, the dirtiest part of the trunk, there are swarming on every square inch of approximately 1000 bacteria. The bacillus cereus, a bacterium that can cause food poisoning and in particular in rice, pasta and potatoes sitting occurred most often.

Incubator

Professor Ron Cutler, "Most bacteria do not cause health problems, but in some cars, we found several species of potentially dangerous bacteria. Most people clean their homes, their cars but neglect the other hand. Some of them seem to drive around in a garbage can. It's the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, especially when you eat in your car and leave things lying around. "

Everything About Liposuction

In today’s health and eating habits trend, many people seem to abuse their selves even if they are widely aware that too much of anything can leave unwanted results. Taking in an increasingly large amount of food during, in between, and after meals can really cause harm to your health; you can end up diagnosed with various health problems like diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. These may diseases may sound harmless but if you dissect the information regarding these problems you will understand that these diseases can actually cause death if uncontrolled or unmanaged over time. Because of this worldwide phenomenon many medical and diagnostic procedures are now being promoted and recognized by medical practitioners all over the globe. Among the most popular trend in losing body fat is undergoing a cosmetic procedure called liposuction.

Liposuction is actually a very simple procedure which makes use of certain surgical preparations. The surgery involves the removal of excess fats in the body which are situated between the skin and muscle fibers. In this procedure, a stainless steel cannula or tube is inserted on the earlier stated areas while a very powerful suction pump vacuums the fat out of the body. This method is performed on all areas where there is excessive fat build up. The common areas which undergo liposuction include the abdomen, arms, buttocks, anterior, inner, and outer thighs, as well as the face and neck.

There are various kinds of liposuction which is based on the amount of anesthesia which is introduced in the body during the whole procedure. The first type is the Tumescent Liposuction which makes use of very large amount of local anesthesia which is diluted and injection in the areas where the procedure will take place; once it has been injected you will notice that the area become firm and swollen. With this kind, you will not need the aid of anti-pain medications because the effect of local anesthesia can last for several hours. The second type is the Modified Tumescent Liposuction which involves the use of both local and systemic anesthesia; but this type is usually given by an anesthesiologist because of the danger that it poses.

Before undergoing liposuction, you should be aware that you are supposed to undergo a number of medical and physical check-ups because this is a major operation that involves a great amount of preparation. Also take note that the price of the procedure is quite costly, but this does not mean that you should settle for the least expensive ones; the point is you should do your research on the available doctors who perform the procedure in your area and their capability of providing you with the best service there is. In addition, there are many people see this as a procedure that is unnecessary, but you might change your point of view when you dig deeper and understand that the surgery is about helping people go back to their normal condition wherein the risks of acquiring unwanted health conditions are decreased from one to none.

Engeye Teen Connection (ETC) Launches New Education Initiative Bucks for Books and Greg Hickey Joins ETC Board of Directors

Misty Richards & Sara Weinman

Engeye Teen Connection (ETC) is made up of committed teenagers who want to make a difference in the lives of children in rural Uganda. ETC is proud to announce that Greg Hickey will be joining the Board of Directors and will be assisting with the new education program, ETC Bucks for Books. Greg, a sophomore at Shaker High School, will join his brother Brian Hickey, Sara Weinman and Adriana King on the ETC BOD. Together, these teens and their advisors are working to help raise awareness and advocate for the villagers of Ddegeya, many of whom live on just a dollar a day.

ETC Bucks for Books campaign was recently launched by the Board of ETC in an effort to provide basic textbooks and school supplies for schools in rural Uganda. The program was inspired by 16 year old Sara Weinman’s recent visit to Ddegeya village. Sara was able to witness firsthand the desperate need at the local schools near the Engeye Health Clinic. The teachers at these schools are trying to educate their students without textbooks and the most basic school supplies. ETC believes that Education provides promise and hope for the children and the families of the village. To respond to this need, ETC board members Sara Weinman, Brian Hickey and Greg Hickey have launched a fundraising effort to provide textbooks for the students at these rural schools. 100% of the donations received will go toward the purchase of textbooks and school supplies for these students.

Brian Hickey, 17, will be traveling to Uganda this summer to deliver the textbooks and school supplies to the needy schools. Donors will be able to see pictures of the delivery of the books and supplies on the Bucks for Books website. New board member, Greg Hickey, is also planning on traveling to Uganda in 2012 to deliver additional textbooks.

Donors are asked to visit http://www.etcbucksforbooks.org/ to find out how they can support this valuable program. ETC hopes teens from across the United States will work together to help them meet their campaign goal. Schools, churches, synagogues, youth groups, and families can work together to provide the tools necessary to offer hope to the many children of Ddegeya who go without the promise of an education. All donations can make a difference. While a $25 donation can purchase 2 textbooks and supplies, a donation of $500 can sponsor an entire classroom. To see a video on the Engeye Health Clinic, please visit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-LqS5j6vVg

ETC is a proud partner of Engeye Scholars http://engeyescholars.org/ and Engeye Health Clinic http://engeye.org/

About the Engeye Health Clinic and Engeye Scholars

Engeye, a U.S. and Ugandan NGO based in Uganda, was created in 2006 by a dedicated group of medical students to address the disparity in basic health, education and environmental needs of rural Ugandan villagers. Since its inception, the Engeye team has grown to include lawyers, architects, physicians, public health enthusiasts, engineers and more. The Engeye Health Clinic provides care for a region in Uganda that is voiceless, despite its substantial need, and that otherwise would not have access to healthcare. Dr. Stephanie Van Dyke, Dr. Carlos Elguero, Stephen Po-Chedley, Misty Richards, James WalkerJames Walker and Keith DesRochers make up the Board of Directors. The Engeye Scholars program was born to assist the schools in Ddegeya Village. Education is highly valued in Uganda and many experts believe education is the key to raising poor countries out of poverty. Through scholarships, the children of Ddegeya Village have the opportunity to attend boarding school, which delays child bearing, empowers women and provides newfound hope for a child to fulfill his or her dreams. Elaine Pers Hickey and Theresa Weinman are Co-Directors of the program.

Integrated intervention of Tai Chi shows value

Chronic heart failure patients reap benefits of this ancient art

Researchers from Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center disclose in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine, patients with chronic heart failure appear to have a better quality of life and state of mind if they practice Tai Chi on a regular routine.

For the background information in this new study researchers had written in brief in history patients with chronic heart failure had been considered too weak for exercise, this thinking had been carried on through the late 1980's that these patients should avoid exercise. It was a standard medical recommendation. Initial evidence advocates that meditative exercise could hold benefits for those patients with chronic systolic heart failure. This is yet to be tested rigorously in a large clinical sample.

Researchers had monitored and evaluated 100 patients with systolic heart failure. Patients had been recruited between May 2005 and September 2008. At random selection half of the patients had taken a 12 week Tai Chi exercise, the other half matched in time had received education.

Those in the Tai Chi group had attended two one hour classes a week. The education classes were held twice weekly and headed by a nurse practitioner. The patients in total were similar in heart disease severity, rate of comorbities and demographics.

When the twelve weeks ended, those in the Tai Chi group had remarkably greater improvement in quality of life in comparison to the education group. They also had more self confidence to perform particular exercise associated activities, referred to as self-efficacy. These participants were more physically active and had an overall greater sense of well being.

Researchers had concluded Tai Chi exercise is safe and has good rates of adherence, could be valuable in the improvement of daily exercise, quality of life, self-efficacy and the mood in those patients who are frail and unconditioned with systolic heart failure. The more restricted concentration on traditional measured exercise capacity could underestimate the possible benefits of integrated interventions like those such as Tai Chi.

In March of this year, Dr. Peter M. Wayne, PhD, assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and director of the Tai Chi and Mind-Body Research Program at Harvard's Medical School's Osher Research Center stated there is a “growing body of carefully conducted research is building a compelling case for tai chi as an adjunct to standard medical treatment for the prevention and rehabilitation of many conditions commonly associated with age,"

For more information on the value of Tai Chi for health there are numerous resources online including Tai Chi Health.

New Research Shows Honey Fights Drug-Resistant Germs

Riversdale Manuka Honey

Herbal ingredients and natural nutrients are often capable of supporting different functions within the body, and current research is showing that a certain kind of honey may be useful in fighting drug-resistant germs.

Honey has been used for thousands of years, but its medicinal popularity fell when antibiotics became the go-to treatment. Raw, natural honey contains a variety of antioxidants and enzymes, and also has antibacterial properties, which can be effective both internally and externally. Raw honey has historically been used on the skin because it contains an antiseptic substance called inhibine which may prevent infection. Manuka honey is a specific kind of honey cultivated from the Manuka tree (or tea tree), which is native to New Zealand. Tea trees have long been revered for their oil, which has anti-bacterial properties often used for skin conditions. To learn more about natural remedies and detoxification techniques, visit my website at www.dreliaz.org.

Microbiologist Rose Cooper of the University of Wales Institute recently studied the effects of Manuka honey on drug-resistant germs. The laboratory results showed that the honey fought off certain germs, including drug-resistant Staph, commonly referred to as MRSA.

MRSA, or Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, is a highly resistant form of Staph. Staph (Staphylococcus aureus) is a common germ found on the skin of most people and common surfaces. For those with weakened immune systems, Staph can cause serious infections such as skin or wound infections, pneumonia, or infections of the blood. The wide use of antibiotics has helped create MRSA, which is now harder to kill.

Previous studies have shown that Manuka honey decreases the surface pH of wounds (so germs can’t survive) and can help keep bacteria out. While all honey does contain anti-bacterial properties, commercial honey is usually pasteurized and processed, which decreases its beneficial properties. Manuka honey is special because it produces a different substance called methylglyoxal, which has unique antibacterial activity.

"The work in our lab has shown that honey can make MRSA more sensitive to antibiotics such as oxacillin — effectively reversing antibiotic resistance. This indicates that existing antibiotics may be more effective against drug-resistant infections if used in combination with Manuka honey," says Cooper, who hopes to use her research in clinical trials and test other kinds of honey.

It’s so exciting to see research from around the world validating the use of integrative medicine -- combining natural health solutions, such as honey, with traditional treatment, such as antibiotics.

Substantiating a product's health claims is the foundation for creating effective natural supplements. For more information about natural remedies, visit http://tinyurl.com/nathealing.

South African city pays for urine

Remember the news about a Chinese city paying its residents for each cigarette butt they collect in an effort to promote environmental hygiene?

Another city on the other side of the globe is launching a similar way to encourage people to observe environmental cleanliness.

In Durban, South Africa, a project was initiated that offers its people to buy their urine to encourage them to use dry toilets.

In an effort to improve sanitation and save money, the port city of Durban has put up around 90,000 water-free toilets.

City environmentalists want to install 20-liter containers on 500 of the toilets that can catch nitrates, phosphorus and potassium from the human water waste and turn them into fertilizer.

The containers will be collected once a week and families will be paid approximately 30 rands (US$4.3, €3.2), which is not small where many people live on less than 14 rands (US$2, €1.5) per day.

While there is reluctance and open opposition among the people in the use of this innovative approach due to cultural practices and beliefs, proponents believe that this is the right method as a way to improve social hygienic practices that led to the cholera outbreak in 2002.

The Swiss lab Eawag and the Bill and Melinda GatesMelinda Gates Foundation are supporting this project.

How much damage does air pollution from heavy traffic do to your body?

To match Reuters Life! HEART-AIR/POLLUTION

May 1-7 is Clean Air Week. Busy roads in Sacramento boost your blood pressure. In your pursuit of green health in Sacramento, where can you safely walk without raising your risk of hypertension, heart disease, neurodegenerative issues, or heart attack--due to the heavy traffic and air pollution? What environmental factors in Sacramento raise your risk of getting Parkinson's disease?

It's air pollution, especially Sacramento's air pollution. And worse yet is the entire Central Valley's air pollution risk. How do you overcome air pollution in your quest for local green health? It's not just about putting an air filter in your residence. For nondrivers just waiting at the bus stop exposes you to heavy traffic-caused air pollution, especially in Sacramento where numerous bus lines run only once an hour.

So where can you safely walk in Sacramento without the fumes from heavy traffic seeping into the city's residential side streets? Sacramento's heavy air pollution also raises your risk of heart disease and other heart problems if you live near a freeway or any area of heavy traffic.

Do you live on a street one block from another street with heavy traffic that cars turn down to avoid traffic-congested avenues? No matter how green and quiet your street seems, you're breathing the tiniest air pollution particles that go right to your heart, literally, and your brain.

You'll see in Sacramento quiet little streets that seem silent, but only a block away is heavy traffic such as living near the bumper-to-bumper traffic off of Watt Avenue or Marconi or where El Camino Avenue intersects Watt Avenue, or where Howe Avenue meets Fair Oaks Boulevard.

The heavy traffic pollutes the air, which then wafts to those silent little streets with private homes and many trees. The trees fool you, making you think you're safe and out among greenery, perhaps near a creek.

Then you're surprised when the air pollution's tiny particles get between your cells or into your blood and organs. The actual cause of Parkinson's disease remains unknown. See the November 4, 2010 Los Angeles Times article by Mary Forgione, "Studies examine environmental factors that may be linked to higher risk of Parkinson's." According to that article, the environmental factors mentioned are air pollutants in various urban areas that may increase the risk.

According to the LA Times article, the Health Notes blog of the Newport News Daily Press reports on a new analysis that identifies high levels of manganese and copper pollution as potential risk factors for some city dwellers. For example, people living in areas with higher levels of manganese pollution had a 78% greater risk of having Parkinson's than those who didn't, according to the Washington University in St. Louis report.

It's not just copper and manganese excesses in the polluted air of some urban areas, but pesticide exposure also raises the risk of getting Parkinson's disease. And people working on farms, ranches, or in rural areas can get exposure just living out in the country, working on farms, or drinking well water that's full of pesticides running off of farms.

You might want to find out more about Parkinson's researach. Michael J. Fox is funding various projects. Fox is the founder of the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research,. The Foundation recently launched a five-year study to identify biomarkers of the progression of Parkinson's disease.

Michael J. Fox has had Parkinson's for almost 19 years, since he turned 30. Check out the article reporting how the Chicago Tribune explores one hospital's participation in the new study in "Northwestern seeks clues to Parkinson's."

Also check out the Los Angeles Times' Greenspace blog which notes that: "Rural residents who drink from private wells are up to twice as likely to develop Parkinson's from certain pesticides, including methomyl, chlorpyrifos and propargite, according to a recent UCLA. People with Parkinson's were more likely to have consumed water from private wells, and had done so for 4.3 years longer on average than people who did not have the disease, the study revealed.

Also, if you live in Sacramento near a freeway, (or any other area near a freeway) your risk of heart disease may go up. Check out the article, Study: Living Near Freeway May Be Hard On Heart - wbztv.com.

Tests showed that microscopic particles in the air, rather than ozone gases, caused a rise in blood pressure and impaired blood vessel function, according to the HealthDay September 14, 2009 article, "Air Pollution May Raise Blood Pressure - Inhaling microscopic particles could raise risk of heart disease, study finds." Breathing polluted air for even two hours can boost blood pressure, potentially raising the risk of cardiovascular disease in those exposed to smog, a new study suggests. The problem with breathing Sacramento's heavily-polluted air in certain parts of the city, could negate the good effects of nutrition and exercise. Also see: Busy Roads Boost Blood Pressure.

Although the increase may not mean much for healthy people, "this small increase may actually be able to a trigger a heart attack or stroke," study author Dr. Robert D. Brook, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Michigan, said in a university news release.

An estimated nearly one in three Americans suffer from high blood pressure, meaning the heart is straining to push blood through the circulatory system. But can getting an air purifier in your home or working at home help?

Or is the air pollution--breathing the tiniest particles--the cause of your hypertension? What do you do when your doctors can't find other causes, you've cut down on salt if you're sensitive to it like 60 percent of those with essential hypertension are, and you've started your green juices regimen or a raw, vegan diet for a few weeks to see what happens? Can air pollution in the area spoil your healthy eating plan?

In the study, which appears in a recent issue of Hypertension, researchers tested 83 people as they breathed levels of air pollution similar to those in an urban city near a roadway.

"We looked at their blood vessels and then their responses before and after breathing high levels of air pollution," study co-author Robert Bard, a University of Michigan clinic research coordinator, said in a news release.

The air pollution caused diastolic pressure -- the lower number in a blood pressure reading -- to rise within two hours. Blood vessels were impaired for as long as 24 hours. "If air pollution levels are forecasted to be high, those with heart disease, diabetes or lung disease should avoid unnecessary outdoor activity," Brook said.

Living next to busy roads also may be bad for your blood pressure, a new study suggests. If you look at the recent Swedish study - see: Busy Roads Boost Blood Pressure, performed by a team of scientists from Lund University Hospital, the data from nearly 28,000 questionnaires about people's living arrangements in Scania, a province in southern Sweden, found that living close enough to traffic noise to hear it also raised blood pressure in younger people.

The scientists found that young and middle-aged people who lived in homes where they were exposed to traffic noise above 60 decibels were more likely to have high blood pressure. The association with hypertension got stronger as the decibel level went up.

If you cut to your own large city in areas such as a house a half block off a main street, where you live a block or so from heavy traffic, you now you have a combination of heavy air pollution from small particles rather than ozone, and you hear the traffic noise on those side streets only half a block from areas of heavy traffic and congested streets. You're hearing the noise, and at the same time you're breathing the small particles. And you wonder why your nutrition regimens are not working right?

For bus riders, and those who must walk in the curbs to and from supermarkets and other shopping malls along streets without sidewalks, the air pollution increases for nondrivers as well as their only free form of exercise is walking next to heavy traffic.

Some urban gyms also are located next to streets with heavy air pollution and traffic. Older nondrivers in Arden Arcade aren't going to take a daily two-hour bus ride to Davis, where there is less small particle air pollution on some days.

When it comes to decibel levels of noise, in the Swedish study, among older people aged 60 to 80, higher decibel levels weren't linked to more hypertension. One reason for the finding could be that younger people are less likely to have high blood pressure, making the impact from traffic noise more evident. For mature people, the small particles of air pollution is especially toxic.

Older people who aren't physically able to move from houses they've lived in for many years, may be breathing the smaller particles that are related to higher blood pressure and heart disease, strokes, and coronary problems caused by the smaller particles of air pollution getting into their bloodstream and organs. Where Can You Safely Walk in Sacramento?

Where can you walk in Sacramento when there aren't any sidewalks and heavy traffic is passing you on the left with small particulate air pollution? Is walking indoors at shopping malls the healthiest way to walk? Or are you better off walking in place at home and perhaps using an air filter that doesn't give off ozone? Check out my downloadable e-book, How to Open a Walking Tour Business.

You are supposed to walk 10,000 steps a day for health. But if you walk in Sacramento, particularly around the rush hour or between noon and 2:00 p.m., you'll be breathing in all those exhaust fumes. See the article, "BBC NEWS | Health | Heavy traffic bad for your heart."

For example, one scientific study found that "people caught in traffic are three times more likely to have a heart attack within one hour than those who are not stuck in a jam." Also see the July 9, 2010 article, "Traffic Pollution Linked to Risk Factor for Sudden Cardiac Death."

If you live in Sacramento, you know how heavy the traffic and air pollution is most of the day, especially along Watt, El Camino, and Marconi Avenues. Although the Surgeon General recommended you walk a minimum of 10,000 steps a day or five miles per day, not everyone can do it because of pre-existing health issues.

And some of those health issues might be due to advanced age, various illnesses, or even from leading a sedentary lifestyle, according to an October 20, 2009 news report from TrekDesk, a company that has come up with a new solution for sedentary employees--a workstation at your desk where you can walk as you work. While the healthcare debate rages on, there is a means for you to take personal control over your health.

You don't have to leave the office or home to do it. If you sit in chairs during the day, you might appreciate learning about the new idea of desk treadmills. See the new Treadmill Desk video on trekking at your desk. Sedentary desk jobs are robbing adults of their health and are one of the leading causes of rising adult obesity rates, now at 18.7% according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Only clean-air Colorado’s obesity rate is the lowest in the nation, but what happened in Colorado now is that it has shown the fastest percentage gain than any state with the exception of Virginia in the past 15 years. If you can't get outside to walk because of polluted air, traffic, or a sedentary desk job, perhaps walking at your desk might help.

TrekDesk offers the first affordable solution that gets employees up and moving, garnering national attention at a time when health care costs and obesity rates are spiraling out of control. Benefits derived by walking during work hours along with the agencies that published the studies:

33-70% reduction in the rates of most cancers (National Institutes of Health)

90% reduction in the number of initial heart attacks (American Heart Association)

50% reduction in the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes (American Diabetes Association)

70% reduction in the risk of stroke (American Heart Association)

Nearly 2/3 of our nation’s population is overweight with 50% of this number classified clinically obese. At a time when our nation is turning their attention to health care reform a few strong voices are rallying the cry for workplace and lifestyle reform as a critical piece of the puzzle.

A company known as TrekDesk has designed and is currently selling a unique, affordable solution that has been proven to help employees lose weight, restore health, prevent disease, improve mood and boost productivity: all without ever leaving the office. The only issue is that you need a treadmill in the first place. TrekDesk is a full sized, height adjustable work station which attaches to existing treadmills allowing employees the opportunity to walk slowly while they work without sweating.

Sound bizarre? The human body has evolved with the ability to walk 30 miles per day and its internal health systems are dependent upon walking to keep it in top form. Most American walk on average only 2 miles per day not allowing the body to maintain health or proper weight levels. Sedentary jobs and lifestyles are the main culprit and treadmill desks offer an solution.

Treadmill desks are already in use by major corporations such as GlaxoSmithKline, Humana, Mutual of Omaha and Best Buy however their average cost ranges between $4500-$6500, well beyond the budget of most companies and individuals. TrekDesk however costs less than 1/3 of an average monthly health insurance premium. Priced at $479, TrekDesk is currently shipping free through out the United States.

The health benefits of walking during the day are backed by years of solid medical evidence. Here are some interesting statistics on the benefits derived by walking during work hours along with the agencies that published the studies:

33-70% reduction in the rates of most cancers (National Institutes of Health)

90% reduction in the number of initial heart attacks (American Heart Association)

50% reduction in the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes (American Diabetes Association)

70% reduction in the risk of stroke (American Heart Association)

Is walking along any of the river walkways in Sacramento the healthiest place to walk? Or is walking in your neighborhood safest, even if there are no sidewalks and heavy traffic in front of your home or just around the corner?

The National Institutes of Health reports that 84% of ALL medical claims are the direct result of a lack of exercise and poor diet/lifestyle choices. Obesity related claims are costing our health care system in excess of $100 Billion annually. References to the medical reports proving the health benefits of treadmill desks can be found at the TrekDesk website.

Heeding the Surgeon General’s recommendations to walk a minimum of 10,000 steps or about 5 miles per day would have a dramatic impact on the nation’s health reform landscape. TrekDesk allows employees to meet this goal in as little as 2.5-3 hours per day while they work.

Due to being sedentary and seventyish, this author walked a slow, 13,114 regular steps today along the curb as many of the streets in my neighborhood have few sidewalks. And my Omron pedometer noted that I walked 4.13 miles, 7,772 aerobic steps, and burned 228 calories. The heavy traffic along the street felt threatening, even though the newspaper said the air quality today was good.

In spite of the muddy curbs and teenage males followed by younger kids on bikes riding on the sidewalk not in the bike lane, tailgating me when the few narrow sidewalks became available, the walk had very good results. My back pain from usually sitting up to12 hours a day in front of a computer is gone.

Whatever you choose, treadmill, walking outside, or the safer way, walking through indoor shopping malls, get moving for your health, if your doctor advises you to walk for exercise. Shopping mall walking also is a good way to walk without breathing in the heavy traffic pollution as you walk along the curb where there are no sidewalks.

You could join a gym, go to the "Y," link up with a community center's walking program, take a chair exercise course, or solve your walking issues at home or at work with a treadmill that you can use at your desk, maybe even create a cleaner environment with an air purifier as you walk indoors. Perhaps Sacramento should have more sidewalks and spaces for walking safely without bikes tailgating the slower walkers.

Having Trouble Sleeping? Try These Foods!

Do you have problems sleeping at night? Do you have trouble going into a food coma? A food coma is the state of drowsiness, many people find themselves in following eating large meals or foods that make you sleepy. Tryptophan is an amino acid in foods that actually stimulates melatonin and serotonin production in the brain. These neurotransmitters have a calming effect on the mind and the body. So eating meals heavy in tryptophan can have a narcotic like effect for knocking you out. Here are some foods that can actually help you sleep.

1. Oatmeal. Like toast, a bowl of oatmeal triggers a rise in blood sugar, which in turn triggers insulin production and the release of sleep-inducing brain chemicals. Oats are also rich in melatonin, which many people take as a sleep aid.

2. Warm milk. Like bananas, milk contains the amino acid L-tryptophan, which turns to 5-HTP and releases relaxing serotonin. It's also high in calcium, which promotes sleep.

3. Ice cream. Dairy is also another source for tryptophan, making it a sleep-inducing food. The fun part is that ice cream is loaded with calcium because it is a dairy product and calcium actually helps the body process the tryptophan more efficiently. So eating a bowl of ice cream (while not good for the waistline )can actually help you achieve the bottom line if that bottom line is sleep.

4. Bananas. Potassium and magnesium are natural muscle relaxants, and bananas are a good source of both. They also contain the amino acid L-tryptophan, which gets converted to 5-HTP in the brain. The 5-HTP in turn is converted to serotonin (a relaxing neurotransmitter) and melatonin.

5. Cherries. Fresh and dried cherries are one of the only natural food sources of melatonin, the chemical that controls the body's internal clock to regulate sleep. Researchers who tested tart cherries and found high levels of melatonin recommend eating them an hour before bedtime or before a trip when you want to sleep on the plane.

6. Toast. Carbohydrate-rich foods trigger insulin production, which induces sleep by speeding up the release of tryptophan and serotonin, two brain chemicals that relax you and send you to sleep..

There you are! Try these foods and you will be in dream land soon. Happy sleeping!

96% of bees start to disappear in the US

Reports have it that birds and fish "naturally die" by the thousands according to scientists. Does that mean that the public should breathe a sigh of relief and need not panic even if they occur in various continents almost at the same time?

Researchers in the University of Illinois said on Monday that four species of bumblebees that were once thickly-populated are now close to extinction.

In fact, there was a 96 percent decrease in the four species of bees according to a study conducted in the US university, which confirmed that the agriculturally vital insects are being affected worldwide.

The study also said that the bees' range had decreased up to 87 percent.

A disease-producing organism may be partly involved for honeybees, however, there is evidence that the diminishing breeding sites are a causative factor for the bees' population decline.

Describing the phenomenon as "alarming," researchers said in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, "We provide incontrovertible evidence that multiple Bombus species have experienced sharp population declines at the national level."

Principal investigator Sydney Cameron said in a phone interview, "These are one of the most important pollinators of native plants."

Cameron added, "The 50 species (of bumblebees) in the United States are traditionally associated with prairies and with high alpine vegetations."

The research team pinpointed the causes on many factors such as fungi, parasites and viruses, as well as stress and pesticides.

Bumblebees have also been documented to start disappearing in Asia and Europe but a large-scale study have not been conducted in the US.

Having conducted the three-year study in 382 sites across 40 states, Cameron concluded, "This is a wake-up call that bumblebee species are declining not only in Europe, not only in Asia, but also in North America."

Filipina nurse wanted for $17-M US healthcare scam

US authorities are hunting for a Filipina nurse who figured in what is one of the biggest scams in the healthcare industry of California, in a report by ABS CBN.

Listed in America's "Most Wanted Health Care Fugitive" is Susan Bendigo-Lim, accused of stealing $17 million in an alleged Medi-Cal scam.

The 41-year-old native of Davao City, southern Philippines, is believed to have bagged $10 million.

She was the Director of Nursing for Excel Plus Home Health Services.

According to the report, the Medicare was billed by Bendigo-Lim and her accomplice, Priscilla Villabroza, with millions of dollars for the services provided by fake nurses from 2003 through August 2007.

The unlicensed nurses presented themselves as real nurses and provided services to the homes of disabled adults, children and elderly. The notes were signed by real nurses when it came to billing time.

According to court documents, Bendigo-Lim, a mother of two teens, swayed unlicensed workers to present themselves as licensed vocational nurses thereby falsifying their identity, license, and qualifications.

Her accomplice Villabroza pleaded guilty on five counts of fraud and could face 50 years in jail.

Bendigo-Lim is believed to have left the US to avoid arrest. She was reported to have built up several homes in the Philippines, including one in Cebu City, south of Manila. If caught by the Philippine authorities she may face extradition to the US.
